Moderated by UCLA Kazakh instructor Dennis Keen. \n“Face the Music” Synopsis \nThis documentary film from the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan follows national protests over a local boy band called Ninety One\, who perform in the genre known as Q-Pop (the Qazaq answer to K-Pop). With their dyed hair\, earrings\, makeup\, and androgynous style\, the young artists of Ninety One are challenging conservative standards in a society that still traces its roots to a traditional\, nomadic past. As Ninety One grows in popularity\, driven by a new generation of Kazakh-speaking youth\, their act ignites anger in other sectors of society\, leading to major street protests\, cancelled concerts\, and pressure from the government. As the director Katerina Suvorova explores\, the emergence of Ninety One has revealed a whole series of social and cultural conflicts within Kazakhstani society — contradictions between urban and rural culture\, between traditionalism and globalization\, and between a vertical power system and personal liberty. \nRecommended song for listening before watching the film: “Men Emes” by the group Ninety One. \n  \nMovie Screening & Zoom Discussion Links \n After registering\, you will be emailed a Youtube link to watch the film. If you do not receive your email confirmation\, check your spam or junk mail folders in your email system. \n  \nAbout the Director \nKaterina Suvorova is a documentary film director based in Almaty\, Kazakhstan. Born in the USSR\, she studied live-action cinema at the Higher Courses of Screenwriters and Film Directors at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow and at the Werner Herzog’s Rogue Film School in Los Angeles. Her short documentaries have been awarded various international prizes\, such as the Critics Guild’s Award at the Kinoshok Film Festival and the Special Prize from Robert Bosch Stiftung. Katerina’s previous documentary\, “Sea Tomorrow” (2016)\, was a debut full-length examination of the Aral Sea and the ecological and economic catastrophe that resulted from its destruction. Her film “Face the Music” was released in Kazakhstan in the summer of 2019\, presented at international film festivals and nominated for the Russian National Laurel Award as “Best Film of 2019.” Katerina is currently working on a documentary about civic activism in Kazakhstan and about the plights of Kazakh women. \n  \nAbout the Discussant \nDennis Keen is a Central Asia specialist\, born and raised in Los Angeles but based in Almaty\, Kazakhstan. In Spring 2019\, Dennis taught two courses as a lecturer in UCLA’s Department of Slavic\, East European & Eurasian Languages & Cultures\, “Introduction to Kazakhstan” and “Survival Kazakh.” He is the host of the Kazakh TV travel program “Discovering Kazakhstan with Dennis Keen\,” the founder of the urbanism blog “Walking Almaty\,” and the creator of “Monumental Almaty\,” an initiative to document and preserve Soviet-era mosaics and other works of so-called “monumental art” in Kazakhstan. She recently served as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council from 2017 to 2019. From 2006 to 2009\, she served as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia at The National Intelligence Council. She is co-author of “Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin” (Brookings Institution Press\, 2015). \nPrior to joining Brookings\, Hill was director of strategic planning at The Eurasia Foundation in Washington\, D.C. From 1991 to 1999\, she held a number of positions directing technical assistance and research projects at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government\, including associate director of the Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project\, director of the Project on Ethnic Conflict in the Former Soviet Union\, and coordinator of the Trilateral Study on Japanese-Russian-U.S. Relations. \nHill has researched and published extensively on issues related to Russia\, the Caucasus\, Central Asia\, regional conflicts\, energy\, and strategic issues. Her book with Brookings Senior Fellow Clifford Gaddy\,“The Siberian Curse: How Communist Planners Left Russia Out in the Cold\,” was published by Brookings Institution Press in December 2003\, and her monograph\, “Energy Empire: Oil\, Gas and Russia’s Revival\,” was published by the London Foreign Policy Centre in 2004. The first edition of “Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin” was published by Brookings Institution Press in December 2013\, also with Clifford Gaddy. \nHill holds a master’s in Soviet studies and a doctorate in history from Harvard University where she was a Frank Knox Fellow. She also holds a master’s in Russian and modern history from St. Andrews University in Scotland\, and has pursued studies at Moscow’s Maurice Thorez Institute of Foreign Languages. SUMMARY:The Audacity of Russian Realism: Painting Critically in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will examine the tradition of nineteenth-century Russian realist painting\, a tradition which existed primarily from the mid-1840s through the late 1880s and was associated with a range of artistic figures—from the much-celebrated Ilia Repin\, to the less well-known figures of Vasilii Perov and Ivan Kramskoi. Russian realist paintings have long been compared to those by their French counterparts\, but the styles of realism in these two cultural sectors diverge in important ways. Whereas French realism was centered on forming objective and impartial representations of contemporary life\, Russian realist artists cultivated their tendentiousness\, representing reality while still valuing subjectivity and empathic judgment. This seminar will introduce the major Russian realist painters and contextualize their work in terms of the writings on realism which rose to the fore at the time in order to show how both participate in the general social and political awakening characteristic of Russia in the second half of the century. \n Allison Leigh is an Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She is a specialist in European and Russian art of the 18th and 19th centuries and her first book\, Masculinity and Modernity in 19th-Century Russian Painting\, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Press in late 2019.

SUMMARY:"Sincerity out\, authenticity in: poetry in quest of trust in times of post-truth”
DESCRIPTION:In the first half of the 1990s a new generation of Russian poets\, — or a considerable part thereof — found itself facing the challenge of inventing a new way to speak straightforwardly: readily available poetics either wasn’t up to the job or was itself part of the problem. Poetry optics\, which emerged at the time as a possible solution\, was the “new sincerity.” The new generation of poets entering the scene since the mid-2010s faces completely new challenges\, shaped mostly not by the dominant poetic practices of the past\, but by discourses of power. New political forces\, probably not quite suitably labelled “populist\,” have not just appropriated\, but in fact have weaponized the notion of sincerity. More often than not poetry feels obligated to confront the new\, ever-changing\, opportunistic and largely immoral “sincerity” of public discourse — all the more so because this discourse is so pervasive and mechanisms of defense have yet to be created or even imagined. In a situation like this\, multiple strategies emerge. Some consider pursuing authenticity rather than a compromised sincerity\, while others are desperately seeking a new locus for the poetic voice which can be trusted\, not only by others\, but also by the speaker him- or herself. \nStanislav Lvovsky (b. 1972) is former editor-in-chief of the “Literature” section of OPENSPACE.RU/ COLTA.RU and winner of several Russian literary awards\, including the Andrey Bely Prize in 2017 for the collection “Poems from the book and other poems.” He is the author of six published collections of poetry\, one short story collection and one novel (co-authored with Linor Goralik). One of his poems was the basis of the project “Quiet War Songs” (2015) by six contemporary Russian composers as well as the contemporary dance performance “Parasomnias.” Lvovsky regularly publishes articles on political and social issues\, as well as on cultural history and contemporary Russian poetry in various periodicals and academic journals. His poetry has been translated into in English\, French\, Chinese\, Italian and other languages. Currently\, he is finishing his DPhil thesis on Soviet cultural history at the University of Oxford.

DESCRIPTION:Revisiting the Laurentian and Hypatian Chronicle Accounts About the Failed Raid of Prince Igor Svjatoslavic in 1185.  \nA talk by Professor Harvey Goldblatt\, Yale University \nHarvey Goldblatt is a Professor of Medieval Slavic Literature in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Yale University. He is the author of numerous publications on general problems of language debates in the Slavic world as well as on specific works that deal with language speculation in and the literary patrimony of Slavia orthodoxa. His current projects include a major study on the Igor´ Tale\, tentatively entitled “Слово о пълку Игоревѣ – The Lay of Igor’s Campaign. A Guide and Commentary” (to be published by the Ukrainian Harvard Research Institute) as well as various aspects of the Cyrillo-Methodian literary tradition. A two-volume collection of his studies will be published in Poland in early 2019\, under the title Studies on the Medieval and Premodern Literary Civilization of Russia and Ukraine. DESCRIPTION:Professor Majid Al-Haj of the University of Haifa will discuss his forthcoming book\, which looks at the influx of Russian immigrants into Israel\, their ethnic formation and their impact on politics\, culture and society in Israel. \n\nRSVP   Flier \nCo-sponsored by the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History\, the UCLA Center for European and Russian Studies\, the Department of Slavic\, East European and Eurasian Languages and Cultures\, and the UCLA Russian Flagship Program\n \nAbout the Talk \nThe Russians in Israel: A New Ethnic Group in a Tribal Society (London: Routledge) explores the immigrants who came to Israel from the Former Soviet Union (hereafter Russian Immigrants) in the 1990s over the course of the three decades since the arrival of the first wave. In particular\, the book focuses on ethnic formation among Russian immigrants\, their location within the ethnic map of Israeli society\, and the impact of these immigrants on the traditional bi-polar Ashkenazi-Mizrahi ethnic division. \nThe talk will address both the existing and the anticipated influences of these immigrants on politics\, culture and social structure in Israel as well as their impact on regional issues\, in particular the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Based on a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods\, Prof. Al-Haj will analyze these subjects in the context of the historical developments of Israeli society and the demographic\, economic and political changes that have taken place in Israel over time. \nAbout the Speaker \nMajid Al-Haj is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology and the Director of the Center for Multiculturalism at the University of Haifa\, where he also was a Vice President for Research. He has been a Visiting Professor at Carleton University (Canada)\, Duke University and Rutgers University (USA). In his academic work\, Prof. Al-Haj has focused on Israel Studies\, sociology of education\, political sociology\, inequalities\, immigration and comparative ethnic relations. \nProf. Al-Haj is the author of 14 books\, and over 100 articles in refereed journals and book chapters in various languages. Among the books he has published are: Education\, Empowerment and Control: The Case of the Arabs in Israel (NY: SUNY Press\, 1995) and Immigration and Ethnic Formation in a Deeply Divided Society: The Case of the 1990s Immigrants from the Former Soviet Union in Israel (Leiden: Brill Academic Publishers\, 2004). \nAlongside his academic pursuits\, he has led a number of pioneering nationwide projects and initiatives aimed at promoting social justice\, equality and diversity\, and enhancing dialogue and peace among Palestinians and Israelis. \nRSVP \nSponsor(s): Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies\, Center for European and Russian Studies\, Slavic Languages and Literatures\, Russian Flagship Program
