DESCRIPTION:Event Flier \n\nILLUSTRATING RUSSIA\nCOMIC ART\, GRAPHIC NARRATIVES & BOOK ILLUSTRATION\n\nFriday\, November 16th\, 2018\n7pm – 9pm\n362 Royce Hall\, UCLA\n\nDr. Julia Alekseyeva is a scholar\, writer and illustrator who specializes in non-fiction graphic narratives\, comic journalism\, and memoir. Her non-fiction historical memoir entitled Soviet Daughter (2017) won the 2017 VLA Diversity Award and has been featured on NPR\, Lilith\, Tablet\, The Week\, and the Rumpus\, among others. Her most recent work includes graphic narrative articles on Dziga Vertov and 1968. Dr. Alekseyeva received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Comparative Literature. Her academic work focuses on interactions between global media and radical leftist politics. Dr. Alekseyeva is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University. \nVictoria Lomasko is a Moscow-based artist and author working in the genre of graphic journalism. She is the author of Forbidden Art (2011) which she co-wrote with Anton Nikolayev. Her new book Other Russias (2017)\, translated by Thomas Campbell\, was published by N+1 and Penguin and received the “Best Book in Translation”—2018 Pushkin House Russian Book Prize. A graduate of the Moscow State University of Printing Arts\, Lomasko describes herself as “the last Soviet artist” as her art draws heavily on the Soviet tradition of illustration and graphic design. Lomasko’s latest project is the mural design for the Grad gallery at the Somerset House in London. \nVladimir Zimakov is a printmaker and  illustrator\, an associate professor of art and design at Lasell College\, and director of the Wedeman gallery. He has illustrated books and designed book covers for the world’s leading publishing houses\, including Penguin\, Random House\, Faber and Faber\, the Folio Society\, and Vita Nova. His book illustrations include The Diary of a Madman by Nikolai Gogol\, Moby Dick by Herman Melville\, Walpugisnacht and the Golem by Gustav Meyerink\, Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood\, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. She is a poet\, prose writer\, essayist\, and translator. She is an author of 20 books of poems and prose as well as children’s books. She has translated to Russian Etgar Keret’s novels and Vitautas Pliura’s poems (in collaboration with Stanislav Lvovsky). Since 2014 Linor Goralik has been Editor-in-Chief of the Booknik.ru internet portal which is dedicated to the Jewish literature and culture. She teaches Costume Theory in the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Linor Goralik won the Triumph Young Award (2003)\, Russian independent prize for excellence in literature and art\, and the Portal Award (2012)\, international prize for phantasy novels and critics. DESCRIPTION:“Decoding the Language of Eugene Onegin:\nDiachronic Challenges to Understanding Pushkin’s ‘Novel in Verse’”\n\nDr. Igor Pilshchikov\nVisiting Associate Professor\nUCLA \n\nFriday\, February 23\, 2018\n3:30-5pm\n348 Kaplan Hall\, UCLA \n\nThe talk is focused on a particular type of difficulty in reading Eugene Onegin that Anna Zalizniak has described as “the proximal semantic evolution effect.” This is the name she gives to the misreading and misunderstanding of a classical text that arise from the fact that we often interpret words and constructions in their contemporary sense rather than the sense which they carried in Pushkin’s lifetime. Such semantic shifts have taken place over a relatively small span of the history of the Russian language and are sometimes not easily recognizable even in well-known texts. The linguist Alexander Penkovsky wrote that this effect is “something similar to what are conventionally called ‘false friends’ in translation.” The lecture will outline a typology of now-archaic forms and diachronic “false friends” in Onegin that are often misread by Russian-speakers today\, as well as the resultant difficulties of translating Pushkin’s “novel in verse” into English. \n\nEvent Flyer

DESCRIPTION:“The Topos of Woman’s (Self)-Sacrifice in Late 1830s Russian Prose:\nMelodramatic Narratives in the Age of ‘Official Nation-Building’”\n\nDr. Maria Mayofis\nDotsent (Assistant Professor)\nSchool of Cultural Studies\nNational Research University\nHigher School of Economics\, Moscow \n \nFriday\, February 16th\, 20183:30pm – 5:00pm348 Kaplan Hall \n\nWhen discussing the plots of Russian “society tales” published in the 1830s and 40s\, we can discern two narrative models that have yet to be studied: the story of a “dead fiancée” and the story of a “self-sacrificing woman.” In the first case\, a fiancée dies either just before a marriage or immediately after it; in the second\, a woman denies herself happiness with her beloved in order to keep her family\, or rejects his love so that another woman can marry her sweetheart. \nShould these narrative models be viewed as a legacy of late romanticism? Do they reflect the standard “formulas” of a “society tale”? Or should we analyze these plots as representations of a deeper meaning that could shed new light on the interrelation between literature\, ideology\, and society in Russia in the 1830s and 40s? \n\nEvent Flyer

The tale of a Petersburg clerk who challenges a monument to Peter the Great after losing his fiancée (and his wits) in a devastating flood\, The Bronze Horseman has haunted the pages of Russian literature for almost two centuries\, inspiring not just a myriad new “Petersburg texts” but also a shift in the cultural mythology of Russia’s northern capital. Critics have long read The Bronze Horseman through the prism of tragic theory\, focusing primarily on Pushkin’s portrayal of conflict. This talk will take a different approach. DESCRIPTION:306 Royce Hall\, UCLA \n\n UCLA Slavic\, East European and Eurasian Languages and Cultures presents… \nAn Afternoon with Andriy Lyubka \nUkrainian poet\, translator and essayist \n \nSunday\, October 22\, 2017\n3pm – 5pm\n306 Royce Hall \nAndriy Lyubka was born in 1987 in Riga\, Latvia. He completed degrees in Ukrainian Philology at Uzhhorod University (2009) and in Balkan Studies at the University of Warsaw (2014). He is the author of three books of poetry – Eight Months of Schizophrenia (2007)\, TERRORISM (2008)\, and Forty Bucks Plus Tip (2009) – and five books of prose – KILLER: A Collection of Stories (2012)\, Sleeping with Women (2014)\, Carbide (2015)\, A Room for Sorrow (2016) and Saudade (2017).  His writings have been translated into Polish\, Chinese\, English\, Portuguese\, Russian\, Czech\, Serbian\, Macedonian\, Slovak\, Lithuanian\, Romanian\, Turkish and German. He also works as a translator\, having published several translations from Polish\, Serbian and English into Ukrainian.  He is a columnist for Radio Liberty\, Den and Zbruch.  He has been a curator for the literary festivals Kyivski Lavry and Meridian Czernowitz and has been writer-in-residence at cultural institutes in Poland\, Latvia\, Romania\, Hungary\, Sweden and Austria. \n\nCLICK HERE to view the event flyer \n\nFor event parking\, enter campus via Sunset Blvd / Westwood Plaza. He is also the president of Ukrainian PEN-center and a co-founder and member of the editorial board of the Krytyka monthly. Born in 1953 in the city of Lutsk\, he spent his adolescent years in Lviv\, where he graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in 1977\, and eventually from the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow in 1988. He penned a few books and many articles on civil society\, state/nation building\, nationalism\, national identity\, and postcommunist transition in Eastern Europe\, particularly in Ukraine.
